Commissioner Selig has the opportunity to repair some of the damage that has been dealt to the great American tradition of Major League Baseball by putting his foot down hard on these self-serving cheaters.

Once and for all-time.

Opening another can of worms here, but I'd also like him to eliminate the DH in the American League. Second only to steroids, the DH has spat on tradition, also skewing results. Back in the early 70's a certain group of AL owners, led by a certain Charlie Finley, tried to "inject" life into baseball by keeping pitchers out of the batters box. They voted 8-4 in favor. He'd argued that fans come to ballparks to see homeruns. Where he was wrong was this: Not all baseball fans need instant gratification. There is beauty in this time-honored game called baseball, and it comes in many different forms.

Once upon a time I attended a certain game that didn't have too many hits in it. In fact, only one of the two teams got any hits. Further, the team that didn't get any hits, didn't even have a player reach first base. I was at Tom Browning's perfect game. Many years later, here I am with a lasting, cherished memory of having watched a thrilling game of baseball, almost devoid of any offensive power (as I recall the Reds didn't score too many runs themselves).

Instant gratification, instant gratification. Steroids and the DH. Instant gratification, instant gratification.

Hey, let's turn the tide on these kind that can't get enough sugar in their coffee and on their cereal.

For Mark McGwire, I am glad he went public about steroids. He sees the light. There is good in his doing this. Lots of people say he didn't apologize in the best way, but hey, it IS a start! A start toward repairing the damage to the tradition of Major League Baseball.

I almost have a song together after reading your article...Shoeless Joe and Pete both belong in the Hall of Fame! They've both done their time and more.

Mr. Selig, listen up to Mr. Friedman.

I enjoyed your article. Well-written.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812670776373470303.post-68430431480773507582010-01-14T23:56:39.089-05:002010-01-14T23:56:39.089-05:00Marcel:
As I said in the post, all you need to kn...Marcel:

As I said in the post, all you need to know about MLB is that the most honest guy in the sport is Jose Canseco, an admitted cheater.

As far as I know--I did not buy his book or read it from cover to cover--just about everything that Canseco alleged about PED use in MLB has proven to be true. I can't remember who made the analogy recently, but I agree that Canseco is basically like the mob guy who turns in all of his former accomplices. MLB blackballed Canseco and he is getting his revenge by revealing the dirty underside of how MLB has conducted its business for the past two decades--violating federal drug laws while turning their precious record book into a fraud.

McGwire has a lot of nerve to say that he wished he had not played in the "Steroid Era" when he and Canseco basically created that era in the bathroom stalls of the A's locker room. At least Canseco admits the full truth about what he has done; everyone else lies through his teeth, pleads ignorance (Selig, the other baseball executives, baseball managers, etc.) or offers watered down, self serving apologies (McGwire, A-Rod, etc.).David Friedmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08444347475303187373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6812670776373470303.post-85883430038397331212010-01-14T21:44:25.372-05:002010-01-14T21:44:25.372-05:00marcel
